Title: New insights on mucosal immunity to commensal and pathogenic bacteria
Microbes that inhabit the gut, collectively known as the gut microbiota, provide colonization resistance to pathogens directly (e.g., via nutrient competition) or indirectly by stimulating host immunity. A few studies have elucidated the role of specific intestinal microbes (e.g., Clostridiales, Bacteroidetes) in modulating gut T cell responses, including the generation of T helper 17 or T regulatory cells that modulate mucosal immunity. In contrast, little is known about whether and how commensal microbes modulate B cell recruitment/retention in the gut. In my talk, I will present our recent findings showing that specific bacteria and a specific bacterial factor promote the recruitment/retention of B cells to the gut, the chemokine receptor expressed on gut B cells upon microbial colonization, and the functional consequences for host responses to pathogens.
