Areas of Interest / Research: Neuroanesthesia, and anesthesia and the eye; Has had continuous NIH and other funding for more than 27 years for research on retinal ischemia and neuroprotection, relevant to retinal vascular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, one of the most important causes of blindness in the world; Research interest in the prevention of perioperative visual loss, a devastating condition that affects patients undergoing cardiac, spine, and other surgery; Only anesthesiologist in the world elected to the North American Neuro-ophthalmological Society; Honors include: being elected to the Association of University Anesthesiologists, several-time author of the ‘Best Abstract’ at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meeting, Silver Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and Keser Shem Tov (“good name”) award from the Chicago Center for Torah and Chesed; Has served on numerous committees including as the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the ASA, Chair of the ASA Task Force on Perioperative Blindness, and has been a visiting professor at prominent institutions in the U.S. and abroad; Holds a joint appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology, and is faculty in the Honors College
