MSTP Student Stipend and Benefits

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is designed to attract the best and brightest candidates pursuing careers as research scientists. As such, the University of Illinois College of Medicine is offering competitive benefits that reflect our commitment to fostering a thriving academic community.

Financial Support Heading link

We understand the financial challenges that can accompany medical and graduate school. To alleviate these concerns, we are proud to offer enrolled and matriculating students a generous annual stipend of $37,500 for the 2024-2025 academic year. This provides our students with the financial stability to focus on their coursework, research, and academic pursuits. Recognizing the evolving needs of our students, we also provide stipend adjustments as needed each year, ensuring continuous support throughout the entire duration of the program.

Balancing Academia and Family Heading link

We believe that fostering a supportive environment extends beyond the laboratory and into the personal lives of our students. Our formal parental leave policy allows graduate students, regardless of gender, to take up to 6 weeks of paid leave upon the birth or adoption of a child. This initiative is designed to ensure that our students can balance the demands of their academic pursuits with the joys and responsibilities of family life.

The inclusion of parental leave reflects our commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive academic community. By offering this benefit, we aim to attract and retain a diverse array of talents and experiences, making our program stronger and more representative of the global medical and scientific community.

Investing in Technology Heading link

In a program driven by technology, we believe in equipping our students with the tools they need for success. As part of our commitment to fostering cutting-edge research, each matriculating student will receive a one-time $800 allowance for the purchase of personal computer equipment or supplies needed for the first year (M1) of training.

Seamless Transitions Heading link

Relocation to a new city can be a daunting task. Recognizing the importance of a smooth transition, we offer a one-time $1,000 relocation allowance to assist our students in settling into their new academic home. This support is not just financial; it reflects our dedication to ensuring that our students feel welcome and supported from day one.

Celebrating Individual Achievements Heading link

We believe in acknowledging and celebrating the accomplishments of our students. As of July 1, 2023, the College of Medicine introduced a one-time $2,000 supplemental reward for those who secure an individual fellowship during their tenure in the MSTP program. This is a testament to our commitment to recognizing and supporting the exceptional achievements of our scholars.

Building a Community of Excellence Heading link

Our program is more than just a pathway to a MD/PhD; it is a community where collaboration and innovation thrive. By providing these competitive benefits, we aim to attract the most talented and ambitious individuals in the field of academic medicine and research. We believe that investing in our students is an investment in the future of scientific discovery, and we are committed to supporting each student’s unique journey.
