Celebrating Excellence in Radiology Training: Honoring the Legacy of the Drs. Edward and Sheldon Miller Award – Recepient for 2024-2025 – Dr Charlie Pierce

The Department of Radiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago proudly continues its tradition of recognizing outstanding resident contributions through the Drs. Edward and Sheldon Miller Award of Excellence in Postgraduate Radiology Training. Established through a generous endowment from Dr. Edward I. Miller, MD ’60, in loving memory of his brother Dr. Sheldon H. Miller, MD ’55, this award honors the enduring legacy of two esteemed alumni of the University of Illinois College of Medicine and former UIC radiology residents.

Presented annually, the Miller Award celebrates an R2 or R3 radiology resident who exemplifies the values that defined the lives and careers of Drs. Edward and Sheldon Miller: a passion for learning and discovery, dedication to patient care, strong academic performance, humility, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to the radiology community. This award seeks to highlight the “unsung hero”—a resident who consistently contributes to the department and their peers without seeking recognition.

The selected recipient receives a travel stipend of $750 to attend a major radiology conference in their subspecialty area of interest, with additional travel costs up to $750 supported by the department. The award is formally announced during the department’s annual residency graduation ceremony and is applied to educational travel in the following academic year.

This meaningful award honors the remarkable lives of the Miller brothers:

  • Dr. Sheldon H. Miller, MD ’55, was known for his humility, compassion, and integrity, serving patients at several Chicago-area hospitals until his passing in 1989.
  • Dr. Edward I. Miller, MD ’60, had a distinguished career in California, co-founding Newport Harbor Radiology and serving as Chief of Ultrasound at Hoag Memorial Hospital. He passed away in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of clinical excellence and deep professional respect.

We are also proud to recognize Dr Pierce Charles, a dedicated resident in the Department of Radiology, as a recipient of the Miller Award. His commitment to resident education, mentorship, and clinical leadership embodies the spirit of this award and the legacy it honors.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Miller family for their generosity and continued support, which allows us to uphold this important tradition of excellence in radiology education.
