SUMMARY:Andrius Kazlauskas, PhD (University of Illinois at Chicago): "Resilience to Diabetic Retinopathy (RDR)"
DESCRIPTION:Host: Sang-Oh Yoon, PhD Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness and a common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Although patients at risk are easily identified and there is a delay between DM onset and manifestation of DR, 26% still develop DR, indicating current prevention strategies are inadequate. Existing approaches to prevent DR stem from the understanding that hyperglycemia damages the retina. New insights into DR pathogenesis suggest that such damage commences only after the deterioration of endogenous defense against the deleterious effects of hyperglycemia. This seminar will highlight our group?s recent findings that may inform novel therapeutic strategies to prevent or delay DR. | Event post: https://chicago.medicine.uic.edu/physiology/events?page_id=1952
