Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide and is increasing in prevalence. The pathophysiology has evolved over 50+ years with advancements to increase survival of infants of extreme prematurity. In addition, retinal treatments for blinding ROP have changed from destroying peripheral avascular retina to regulating angiogenic signaling to reduce pathologic angiogenesis. Our lab has sought to improve developmental angiogenesis to support retinal development and vision of the premature infant and reduce the stimulus for pathologic, hypoxia-driven pathologic angiogenesis. We discovered that regulating signaling through vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptors extends normal developmental angiogenesis and reduces pathologic angiogenesis. This talk will discuss our work on VEGF signaling and new avenues.
