The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex scaffold of proteins that plays a vital role in many cellular processes. Many of these proteins are fibrillar, and their assembly into the ECM occurs via protein-protein interactions. However, this process remains unstudied for many ECM proteins. Our lab has found that the novel fibrillar ECM protein SNED1 is implicated in biological processes such as breast cancer metastasis and craniofacial development. However, we have many fundamental questions regarding its assembly into the ECM, including whether it interacts with other ECM proteins or cell-surface receptors, that remain unanswered. Investigating these mechanisms is the focus of my thesis work.
