The hormone oxytocin is known to be important in mammalian reproduction, causing uterine contraction and milk let down. Our work has identified novel roles for oxytocin in mammalian metabolism, including a critical function in adipose lipolysis. Interestingly, this function of oxytocin is mediated by a population of oxytocinergic neurons within the sympathetic nervous system. Finally, our latest work identifies a role for oxytocin in hepatic glucose production. Overall, we believe oxytocin is an underappreciated regulator of metabolic homeostasis, actions which likely predate its later functions in reproduction.
