Institutional Lung Biology & Pathobiology Training Program

The University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, is a recipient of a major Training Program supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This NIH-sponsored institutional training program, currently in its 31th year, was borne out of our commitment to providing comprehensive training of the next generation of creative and meritorious lung researchers at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels.

To support our goal of training in this rapidly evolving and competitive scientific environment, we have revitalized the program to encompass development of careers of individuals seeking to become independent investigators as well as aspiring to research-related careers. The Program continues to have a strong focus on fostering career development and promoting essential skills such as in problem-solving skills and developing characteristics such as resilience and grit which are necessary for long-term success in any research-intensive career. The intensive research training is supplemented by lectures, seminars, graduate courses, and visits by external consultants. Our alumni move on to successful careers in academia, industry, and related fields.

Our Training Program covers five complementary thematic areas with over 40 training faculty Mentor List. All training faculty members are independent investigators with proven success in research and training as well as in obtaining longstanding extramural funding. They meet regularly at seminars and informal discussions and are actively involved in collaborative research.

Thematic Areas:

  1. Lung Vascular Homeostasis, Pathobiology, and Regeneration (LVHPR)
  2. Cellular, Humoral, and Mechanical Bases of Lung Injury and Repair (CHMBLIR)
  3. Microbiome and Metabolism in Lung Biology and Pathobiology (MMLBP)
  4. Lung Genomics and Data Science in Inflamed and Regenerated Vessels (LGDSIRV)
  5. Therapeutics Targeting Lung Vessel Regeneration (TTLVR)

The training program emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary research in areas relevant to lung biology and pathobiology, in an environment that fosters independent and creative thinking, with the objective of training future research leaders.
