Our Commitment to Excellence
At the University of Illinois Pediatric Residency Program, we are committed to creating a welcoming learning environment where every resident, faculty member, and patient is treated with dignity and respect. We recognize that the unique backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of our community strengthen our educational environment and enhance our ability to provide compassionate, culturally responsive care to the children and families we serve. Our goal is for every resident to feel supported, valued, and empowered throughout their training as they develop into thoughtful, compassionate pediatricians.
We take pride in the dedication of our faculty and residents to improving access to high-quality care, strengthening our physician workforce, and addressing the factors that influence the health and well-being of children and families.
Some examples of these ongoing efforts include:
- A holistic review process for residency applicants that considers the breadth of each applicant’s experiences, strengths, and potential contributions to our learning community.
- A comprehensive pediatric curriculum that incorporates education on social drivers of health and their impact on child health outcomes.
- Resident education through the BRIDgE program, which focuses on recognizing bias, fostering respectful learning environments, and promoting equitable, patient-centered care.
- A resident and faculty committee dedicated to advancing a welcoming and supportive learning environment and strengthening culturally responsive pediatric care.
- An annual educational symposium featuring lectures and Grand Rounds that explore topics essential to caring for children and families from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences, while providing practical tools for compassionate, patient-centered care.
- National recognition of our residents through selection as Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) Advancing Inclusiveness in Medical Education (AIM) Scholars.
- An interdisciplinary Medical Spanish curriculum, developed in collaboration with the Internal Medicine, Med-Peds, and Family Medicine residency programs, to strengthen residents’ ability to provide language-concordant care for Spanish-speaking patients and families.
- Annual support for resident participation in national professional conferences, including those hosted by the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA).
- Opportunities for residents to pursue projects and scholarship through our Community Health and Advocacy Track (CHAT) and Global Health Track, with a focus on improving child health and partnering with communities locally and globally.
