PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Due to the limited space for the elective, preference will be given to those students who have demonstrated an outstanding performance in both medicine and surgery. Students seeking to schedule this elective should contact the course Co-Director, Amelia Bartholomew for course approval.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this elective is to gain a surgical, medical and bioengineering perspective of the treatment of heart failure. Specific strategies using medical, device driven care will be highlighted. Advances in the bioengineering of cardiac devices will be introduced.
COMPETENCIES:
The student is expected to engage in the care of heart failure patients involving diagnostics, management strategies, surgical interventions, and intensive care unit care. The students will be expected to become adept in prioritizing their time while involved in high volume, rapid-paced, high acuity care, familiarizing themselves with various life support devices involved in heart failure patients. This is a surgical elective and the student will be expected to observe/participate in care delivered in the operating room. Involvement in a research project on an aspect of heart failure will be expected.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Students will be expected to submit a written summary of their research activities to the course directors, Drs. Bhat and Bartholomew. Items which constitute a written summary can include an abstract submitted to a national meeting, a manuscript, or a running list of projects the student participated in investigating which may still be ongoing or unfinished at the close of the elective.
