SUMMARY:Implementing Tailored Motivational Interviewing in Complex Care Settings: Lessons from a Hybrid Type 3 Trial
DESCRIPTION: Presented by Department of Medicine - Center for Dissemination & Implementation Science, A Richard Weber, MD Supported Lecture CDIS Colloquium Series: This presentation focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of Tailored Motivational Interviewing (TMI) as an evidence-based communication strategy, using adolescent HIV care as a primary case example. Grounded in implementation science, the talk describes a Type 3 hybrid effectiveness?implementation trial guided by the EPIS framework to address persistent challenges in achieving and sustaining high MI fidelity among providers. Using data from clinical and community-based settings, the presentation highlights implementation strategies designed to support provider uptake, skill maintenance, and organizational alignment. Findings demonstrate improvements in provider communication behaviors and clinic-level outcomes within adolescent HIV care, while emphasizing how these implementation mechanisms may generalize to other behavioral health and chronic disease contexts. Lessons learned from large-scale implementation efforts in Florida, including the Scale It Up Florida Learning Health Community and the YACHT study, illustrate how TMI can be embedded within statewide systems and evaluated using innovative methods such as mystery shopper assessments. The presentation concludes by discussing implications for sustaining MI interventions, strengthening data infrastructure, and adapting TMI implementation strategies for broader application across youth-serving and community-engaged health care settings.
