UIC Fellows Symposium
Introduction
The University of Illinois Chicago and UI Health hosted the course What You Need to Know About the Management of Short Bowel Syndrome and Intestinal Failure on May 1, 2026, for gastroenterology fellows from across the country. The program was supported through an unrestricted educational grant from Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
The course focused on the management of short bowel syndrome and intestinal failure — rare but highly complex conditions that require specialized multidisciplinary care.
UIC is internationally recognized as a leader in intestinal rehabilitation and intestinal transplantation and is one of only a few centers in the United States with expertise in these highly specialized areas. UIC is also the only institution in the nation to offer a dedicated fourth-year fellowship training program in intestinal failure.
The course was led by Alan Buchman, MD, MSPH, a nationally recognized expert in the field.
