Introduction
The CHPE is a 10-credit hour non-degree graduate level program for health professionals who wish to hone their expertise as educators and leaders in health professions education. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to develop and implement evidence-based educational programs in their institutions and organizations.

CHPE Format: Online and On-Campus
The CHPE is offered in both online and on-campus formats. While most students will pursue the CHPE online, students living in the Chicago area may wish to consider the on-campus format, which provides opportunities to pursue both on-campus and online instruction. On-campus courses are designed to provide instruction over a 1- or 2- week period, to meet the scheduling needs for our professional students. Elective courses are offered in various formats, based on the course offering availability. Students may take courses from any format. Applicants for the CHPE must indicate their preference for an online or in-person format during the application process.
CHPE Courses: 10 Credit Hours
Admitted CHPE students will take the following 3 courses:
- HPE 502: Instruction and Assessment for Health Professions (4 credit hours)
- HPE 503: Curriculum and Evaluation in Health Professions Education (4 credit hours)
- One Elective Course – Selected by the Student (2 credit hours)
Additionally, all students will participate in a required online orientation prior to the start of the program.
How long does it take to complete the CHPE?
Generally, the CHPE can be completed within 16 months; however, the CHPE is meant to be flexible for working professionals, so the time for completion is dependent on the admitted student’s schedule and class availability. Students are required to follow the Graduate College’s requirements for continuous enrollment. More information about continuous enrollment can be found here.
International Students On-Campus Eligibility
At this time, international students residing in the US are able to apply for either the online or on-campus format of the CHPE. International students residing outside of the US are able to apply for the online format of the CHPE only.

Who is the CHPE for?
This graduate certificate is designed for individuals with a professional degree in a health profession or related to health professions education who desire additional skills and credentials to enhance their professional impact and advance their careers. Our students come from various professions and disciplines, and are at different career stages, from those in the later phase of professional training (such as clinical and academic residents and fellows) to those who are mid- and late career (such as faculty and academic leaders). Students are typically serving in or preparing for leadership roles in academia, healthcare organizations, professional societies, and domestic or international health agencies.
Can I complete the CHPE and then apply to the MHPE or PhD in HPE programs?
Yes, those who complete the CHPE are welcome to apply to the MHPE or PhD in HPE program. If a CHPE student is accepted into the MHPE, up to 12 credits of prior coursework pursued during the CHPE can be transferred to the MHPE program.
