Training for Excellence: Supporting Access, Innovation, and Human Flourishing
Join educators, clinicians, and scholars from across the country for the 26th Annual Health Professions Education (HPE) Summer Conference, a premier event focused on advancing teaching, learning, and innovation in health professions education.
Presented by the Department of Medical Education at the University of Illinois Chicago - this year’s conference brings together leading voices to explore critical topics shaping the future of medical education—from learning environments and educator development to wellbeing, equity, and systems-level change.
Keynote Speakers
James N. Lau, MD, MHPE, FACS
Keynote Address: Environment Matters in Medical Teaching
Teaching and learning in medicine largely occurs within dynamic, team-based environments—often in real-time and in public clinical settings. While challenges such as mistreatment in undergraduate medical education have been linked to suboptimal learning environments, improving these conditions remains complex.
Drawing from his work in clerkship education, Dr. Lau explores how the learning environment directly impacts educational outcomes, professional development, and learner experience.
Javeed Sukhera, MD, PhD, FRCP
Keynote Address: Rethinking the Art and Science of Feedback
Dr. Javeed Sukhera is Associate Chief Academic Officer at Hartford HealthCare and Chair of Psychiatry at the Institute of Living and Hartford Hospital. He also serves as Founding Director of the Center for Research on Racial Trauma and Community Healing.
An internationally recognized leader in health professions education, his work focuses on physician wellbeing, bias in medical education, and the intersection of healthcare, education, and community systems. He holds academic appointments at Quinnipiac University, Yale School of Medicine, and the University of Connecticut.
