Our annual summer externship in internal medicine more than doubled in size in its fourth year.  The 2-week rotation externship began July 8th for underrepresented minority and LGBTQIA+ medical students.  The program was offered to seven medical students, hailing from three campuses, UIC, UI-Peoria and UI-Rockford. During the 2-week rotation students received clinical exposure to outpatient and inpatient internal medicine and actively participated in community experiences working with faculty at community clinics and nursing homes. The aim of this program encourages and supports students considering careers in internal medicine by providing first-hand exposure to the breadth of opportunities available in general internal medicine and its subspecialties.

At the end of the 2-weeks, as a scholarly project, students presented a case presentation to submit as an abstract at the American College of Physicians (ACP) regional student competition.

Thank you to all of our physicians who provided time, came to the case presentation, and served as mentors to our students in the program!
