John Purakal (Chief Resident – University of Illinois Chicago Emergency Medicine) was the recipient of this year’s Derek Piper Scholarship. He traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, in January of this year with a group of physicians to provide internists that staff the emergency departments a high yield emergency medicine curriculum, including certification in ACLS. What they found, upon their arrival, was a country in disarray amidst a national physicians’ strike. This piece, written by John and his wife, Alixandra (Chief Resident – University of Chicago Radiology) highlights the resiliency of the union during the 100 day strike in the face of dire consequences, and what we can learn as patient advocates during our own country’s dynamic healthcare reform.

Dr. John ParukalJohn is currently a participant in our Global Community Health Track (GCHT)  Residency Program as well.
