PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Completion of all third-year core clerkships

PURPOSE:
During your 4-week sub-internship on our inpatient medicine service, you will build on the skills and knowledge base cultivated during your M3 year and apply them to caring for our hospitalized adult patients. Under the supervision of our core family medicine faculty, senior residents, and our hospitalists, you will have the opportunity to rise up to the level of an intern. You will spend one week on night float, but will otherwise be excused on weekends. You’ll also be exposed to our outpatient training sites, primarily the Seton clinic, which is 10 minutes from the hospital. We look forward to sharing our love for family medicine with you. Preference will be given to students planning to apply for residency in Family Medicine.

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. For newly admitted patients, obtain a detailed, pertinent history from all sources, perform a relevant physical exam, construct a broad differential diagnosis, and formulate an cost-effective diagnostic workup and treatment plan
  2. Present patient cases to supervising residents, attendings, and consultants in an organized and concise manner after reviewing the patient’s chart and rounding on them in the morning
  3. Document thoughtful, and succinct notes in Epic that clearly communicates the diagnostic reasoning and plan of care to other members of the patient’s care team, and update the problem list daily to reflect the acuity and severity of the patient’s problems
  4. Utilize various resources to obtain and apply evidence based medicine to the management of your assigned patients
  5. Evaluate and treat an acutely decompensating patient
  6. Interpret EKG’s
  7. Understand the purpose of telemetry monitoring, and how to utilize and interpret a patient’s telemetry tracing
  8. Discuss and practice clinical applications of point of care ultrasound in hospitalized patients
  9. Communicate respectfully with the patient’s multidisciplinary care team
  10. Understand a patient’s medical, socioeconomic, and logistical barriers to discharge and work together with the patient, their family, and multidisciplinary care team to address them
  11. Establish rapport and counsel patients on the pathophysiology of their diagnosis, reasons for their current treatment plan, and strategies to prevent future occurrences
  12. Write a clear discharge summary that succinctly summarizes the patient’s hospital stay, important diagnostic tests and treatments received, and specific follow up items/tasks for the PCP

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD:
Student will be on the inpatient medicine service daily, Monday- Friday, except for Wednesday afternoon didactics. Students will have 2-3 days of outpatient clinic per block.

ASSESSMENT:
Students will receive weekly oral feedback given by residents/on service attendings.  The UIC Assessment form will be completed at the end of the rotation.
