PREREQUISITES: Must be in good academic standing. Must be approved by the course director. Satisfactory completion of M1 Neuroanatomy course.
PURPOSE: Students will refresh their neuroanatomy knowledge, and correlate impact of tumors and vascular accidents with the tracts and nuclei involved
COMPETENCIES: After completing this elective students will be able to do the following: Describe major path ways and their neighborhood; Know the vascular supply patterns in spinal cord, brainstem and cerebral hemisphere; Know clinical signs associated with the most frequently occurring incidents; Can work successfully with a small group of M1 students in a manner that enhances the learning experience and environment for both; Improve skills the student will need as a resident to teach junior residents and students; Improve case presentation skills required throughout the students’ residency.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD: Students learning activities are as follows: Discussion with course director for orientation to laboratory instruction; Assignment to present basic anatomy of CNS in laboratory; Assignment to research two of the most frequently occurring neurological complaints; Assigned to provide narrative assessments of their M1 students; Faculty discussion session of brain stem anatomy.
ASSESSMENT: Students’ grade will be based upon the following: Participation in teaching-based upon instructor feedback; Midterm feedback by course director at a preview session for the 4th laboratory; Submission of Narrative Assessment; Exit interview by course director.
