PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Medicine.
PURPOSE:
The goal of the elective is for students to develop cognitive skills and competency to evaluate patients with renal disease.
COMPETENCIES:
The objectives of this elective are:
- To enable students to identify the major clinical syndromes of nephrology (e.g., acute and chronic renal failure, nephrolithiasis, metabolic acidosis, etc.);
- To enable students to recognize the essential components of these syndromes;
- To make students familiar with the modalities available to diagnose the common forms of renal disease (ultrasound, isotopic studies, biopsy, etc.);
- To make students familiar with the management of common forms of renal disease;
- To acquaint students with the physiology and application of dialysis techniques.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Students will interview and examine assigned patients on the consultation service and prepare a problem list/differential diagnosis and an initial diagnostic and management plan. During rounds with the attending nephrologist, they will propose, discuss, and defend their diagnostic and management plans. Each student will follow on a daily basis the patients who have been assigned to him/her and – with the attending’s guidance – will write appropriate progress notes. Students will be expected to review relevant literature concerning the patients they see, to prepare for and participate in topics and lecture-seminars three times a week, to review histology slides illustrating renal pathology, and to attend the noontime lectures and Medical Grand Rounds presentations given by the Nephrology Section.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are evaluated by their teaching attending, who observes their performance in the inpatient setting, at the bedside, and in rounds. Attendings use the College of Medicine Clerkship Evaluation form which evaluates the students in terms of medical knowledge, clinical skills, professional behavior, and humanistic qualities. Attendings discuss their evaluation with the student at the end of the rotation.
