PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Open to all 4th year medical students who have successfully completed their M3 Core Clerkships in Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. Students who wish to withdraw from this rotation must do so at least 8 weeks prior to their start date and notify Dr. Kanter by e-mail.
PURPOSE: The main objective of this elective is to introduce the senior medical student to the specialty of clinical toxicology.
COMPETENCIES: By the end of the rotation, the student should have the understanding of:
• the differential diagnosis of the poisoned patient;
• the general toxicology management to the overdosed patient;
• the common poisonings encountered by the primary care physician
• the role of poison centers in poison management and public health
• the response to biological, chemical and radiological acts of terrorism.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The 4 week rotation in Medical Toxicology is administered by the Toxikon Consortium which includes the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois, the Division of Medical Toxicology at Stroger Hospital of Cook County (Cook County Hospital) and the Illinois Poison Control Center (IPC). The student is expected to attend and participate in lectures, conferences, journal club, afternoons at the IPC, and daily rounds given by the medical toxicology fellows and attending physicians. The student is required to give a 30-minute presentation on a specific toxin or class of toxins during the rotation. Students are allowed 2 days of excused absences including interview days.
ASSESSMENT: 100% on conference participation and attendance.
