PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed all M3 Core Clerkships, and are in academic good standing. Students may participate in this elective simultaneously with DoCS 1 or DoCS 2 but cannot be enrolled in any other electives simultaneously. Must be approved by the course directors.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this elective is to give senior medical students an opportunity to learn the educational tools/skills necessary to become one who helps learners learn, in a setting where they may practice and get feedback.
The ability to give junior students feedback on their interview skills, oral presentations, and write-ups;
The ability to teach/observe junior students at the patient bedside.
The ability to write summative evaluation of those they have taught.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: Students will facilitate small group discussions, provide feedback, evaluate students and serve as mentor. There are mandatory development sessions which cover teaching at the bedside and giving constructive feedback on case presentations.
TIME REQUIREMENTS: To receive 1-2 weeks of elective credit, M4 students must attend 1 Immersion session orientation session and agreed upon days for one of two Immersion sessions (October, and April). Participants will receive 1 or 2 weeks credit based on time commitment. Students can participate in more than one session and will receive credit for each session. Some of the M4 responsibilities include finding patients, observing histories and physicals and providing immediate feedback, evaluating write-ups and listening to oral presentations. Specific requirements are subject to change.
ASSESSMENT: The hospital site director will observe and give feedback to participating M4 students.
