Hematology/Oncology – ACMC

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Students must have completed all M3 Core Clerkships.

PURPOSE:
The goal of the elective is for students to develop cognitive skills and competency to evaluate patients with hematologic and oncologic diseases.

COMPETENCIES:
The goals of this elective are:

  • To equip students to carry out a more accurate and better focused history and physical in patients with hematologic and oncologic problems.
  • To teach students the proper interpretation of blood smears and bone marrow aspirates.
  • To familiarize the students with the clinical and cytologic features and management of a variety of hematologic disorders: myeloproliferative syndromes, various cytopenias, lymphoma, leukemia, inborn or acquired disorders of blood coagulation.
  • To familiarize students with the clinical features, work up, and management of a variety of oncologic diseases, including but not limited to cancers of the breast, reproductive system, GU system, GI system, aerodigestive tract, and brain.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The students will see patients in consultation or as primary patients of the Hem/Onc Service and will follow them throughout their hospital course. During daily rounds with the attending hematologist, they will present patients, review pertinent articles or topics, verify historical and physical findings at the bedside, examine blood smears and marrow smears, formulate and reassess diagnostic and management decisions, and write progress notes. In the office, they will have the opportunity to examine patients with a variety of hem/onc disorders.

ASSESSMENT:
Students are evaluated by their teaching attending, who observes their performance in the outpatient setting, at the bedside, and in rounds. Attendings use the College of Medicine Clerkship Evaluation form which evaluate s the students in terms of medical knowledge, clinical skills, professional behavior, and humanistic qualities. Attendings discuss their evaluation with the student at the end of the rotation.

    Note: Clinical electives at Advocate hospitals (ACMC, AIMMC, ALGH) are only available to students from LCME and AOA accredited institutions.
