PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkship in Psychiatry.
PURPOSE: The goal of this elective is to provide 4th year medical students with experience in one or several of the following patient care settings: inpatient adult psychiatry, inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry, and/or consultation/liaison psychiatry. (Students should indicate their preferences when signing up; however there is generally flexibility to accommodate change/exploration of growing interests throughout the rotation. )
COMPETENCIES: By the end of this elective, students will be expected to demonstrate the following medical knowledge:
- psychopathology commonly seen in the setting(s) elected
- pharmacologic agents commonly used in the setting(s) elected
- non-pharmacologic treatments and psychodynamic therapies applied in the setting)s) selected
By the end of the elective, students will be expected to demonstrate the following skills:
- formation of therapeutic alliance with psychiatric patients
- thorough psychiatric interviews
- appropriate documentation of behavioral health interactions
active participation as a member of a behavioral health treatment team
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Instructional methods include:
- didactic seminars with residents (generally held on Wednesdays)
- daily rounds on patients
- assigned readings
- supervision by provided by psychiatry residents and faculty
ASSESSMENT: Students will be evaluated at the end of each rotation by all residents and faculty whom they have worked with.
