AVAILABLE FOR AY 21/22
PREREQUISITES: This 2 or 4 week elective is geared towards M3 and M4 students who would like to gain basic knowledge of ultrasound in emergency medicine and be able to incorporate it into their everyday clinical practice. We do not require any pre-requisites as we believe that the ultrasound roation will help students go on to excel in their other rotations.
PURPOSE: This Emergency Medicine elective is designed to help incorporate emergency bedside ultrasound as a tool for diagnosis and treatment. Current literature and future applications of emergency bedside ultrasound will be explored while on rotation.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: The student will be expected to attend four bedside teaching sessions per week at either UIC or AIMMC and one ultrasound quality assurance meeting (Friday afternoon). The student will also be required to complete pre-assigned reading assignments. Bedside scanning will be performed on a variety of patients presenting to the emergency department.
ASSESSMENT: The student will work with the ultrasound faculty and ultrasound fellow and will be judged based on participation and progression throughout the clerkship. Students will meet with faculty at midpoint and be given feedback regarding their progress during the rotation. They will be given a final grade at the end of their rotation.
