PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the Medicine and Surgery Clerkships.

PURPOSE: The elective is designed to broaden the students exposure to a specific area necessary expertise.

COMPETENCIES: At the completion of the rotation, the student should be aware of the current diagnostic work-up and evaluation of all patients with breast related complaints and should also be familiar with the minimally invasive, breast conserving, and radical surgical options for patients with breast malignancy. In addition, the student will have had exposure to ultrasound guided and stereotactically guided biopsy techniques. The student will also e aware of the indications and contradiction of sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary reconstruction. In addition, the student should develop an understanding of how to counsel patients in making their decisions when treatment options exist. If the student’s schedule allows, the student will also have the exposure to the pre-optive, intra-optive and post operative management of the patients with gynecologic pelvic malignancies.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The student should participate in Grand Rounds, teaching conferences and lectures. Outpatient sessions in the Caldwell Brest Center, inpatient rounds with the Gynecologic Oncology attendings and residents operative (Breast-Gyn/Oncology) sessions in the main operating room and Ambulatory Surgical Center all are a part of the rotation. In addition, Gynecologic Oncology outpatient office exposure, here at Lutheran General Hospital will be included.
