Dr. Zhou received the DISTINGUSHED INVESTIGATOR AWARD from The Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research

At the 104th Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in November of 2018, Dr. X. Joe Zhou received the DISTINGUSHED INVESTIGATOR AWARD from The Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals for their extraordinary accomplishments in the field of medical imaging, as objectively demonstrated by years of continuous NIH funding with a large number of impactful publications as measured by citations. Dr. Zhou is the first active faculty member in the Department of Radiology, UIC, who received this honor. Together with this award, Dr. Zhou is inducted into the Academy’s Council of Distinguished Investigators – an elite group of highly accomplished investigators in the area of radiological research.

Dr. Zhou is a tenured Professor in the Department of Radiology and serves as Director of Center for Magnetic Resonance Research 3T Program (CMRR-3T). He is an internationally recognized medical physicist and holds 35 patents on MRI technologies. Dr. Zhou is credited for achieving the highest spatial resolution (~6 ?m isotropically) in the early 1990’s (Zhou and Lauterbur, 1992). Subsequently, his research led to significantly better understanding of several MRI physics phenomena, such as eddy currents and Maxwell terms. More recently, he pioneered the development of a novel diffusion model using fractional order calculus for cancer imaging (Sui et al., Radiology, 2015). Dr. Zhou has authored more than 320 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, as well as a popular book – “Handbook of MRI Pulse Sequences”.
