Dr. Gelila Goba received the Martin-Peterson Global Health Scholar Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) on December 12th, 2017.  This Award recognizes an exceptional obstetrician gynecologist from a low or middle income country employed by a formal Hospital or University in the United States.

The Global Operations Advisory Group noted Dr. Goba’s commitment to Women’s Health, both in Chicago and in Ethiopia, and for her role as the Fellowship Director of Global Women’s Health in the UIC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She was also recognized for establishing The Mela Project, the OB/Gyn Residency Program in the Mekelle University Hospital in northern Ethiopia which provides resident education, mentored research and OB/GYN faculty development in with ultimate goal of  establishing an “OB/GYN Center of Excellence”. Under Dr. Goba’s leadership, The Mela Project is expanding to include South Sudan, Uganda, and Somaliland.
