
Chicago, IL – The Chicago Radiological Society (CRS) will present its 2023 Distinguished Service Award to Edward A. Michals, MD during the CRS March 22nd Education Program at Rush University Medical Center’s Searle Conference Center. The Distinguished Service Award or Gold Medal is the highest honor the Chicago Radiological Society can bestow upon a member and recognizes Dr. Michals for his many years of service to radiology as well as his leadership in organized medicine on local, state, and national levels. Dr. Michals earned his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Loyola University in New Orleans. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed a diagnostic radiology residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago followed by a fellowship in neuroradiology at the University of Chicago, receiving two resident teaching awards during his fellowship training. Following training, Dr. Michals joined the faculty of the University of Chicago as Assistant Professor of Radiology prior to his appointment as Director of Diagnostic Neuroradiology at University of Illinois at Chicago, where he currently holds the title of Associate Professor and is Vice Chairman of Education, previously serving as Director of the Radiology Residency Program. Dr. Michals has been recognized as Department Faculty of the Year at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has been the recipient of an additional nine awards for resident teaching while at the University of Illinois. Past president of the Chicago Radiological Society, Dr. Michals has been a member of the CRS Executive Committee since 2005 and has served on the Illinois Radiological Society Executive Committee since 2010. On the national stage, Dr. Michals has represented Illinois as Councilor to the American College of Radiology since 2016 and served as Co-Chairman of the ACR Continuous Professional Improvement Neuroradiology Panel for five years. He is an active member of the Radiological Society of North America and has served on both the RSNA Local Scientific Exhibits Committee and RSNA Local Technical Exhibits Committee. Dr. Michals is also an active member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and has served as Chairman of the ASNR Audio-Visual Committee as well as Meeting Session Moderator for the 2018 ASNR Annual Meeting. For his many years of service to organized medicine and outstanding teaching of radiology, Dr. Michals was recognized and awarded Fellowship in the American College of Radiology in 2012. He is the author of 18 publications and three book chapters and served as program director of the University of Chicago Radiology Review Course for several years. Former captain of the University of Chicago Rugby Team, he is past president of the Chicago Griffins Rugby Football Club and served for many years as a Level I Referee for the Chicago Area Rugby Football Union. |
