I have lived all over the place and I really love this country. Our health outcomes in the US and our impact on world health are not that great though, and I know we can do better. Family Medicine has been a great career for me personally. I treasure clinical encounters and clinical teaching. I enjoy patients of all ages and all walks of life. I have worked in the public sector, first for Cook County for 7 years and now University of Illinois at Chicago for 15 years. In addition to clinical Family Medicine including inpatient and maternity care I have also had the opportunity to help build a better health system through education and health administration. My single longest role was as Residency Director here at UIC for 12 years. That was fantastic, and I was fortunate to hand off to someone even better, our current PD Evelyn Figueroa! Now I am serving as Associate Head for Clinical Affairs and Director of Inpatient Services for DFM, and as a Medical Director in Managed Care at UI Health. My aim is increasing health care value (roughly, benefits/resource utilization). I feel privileged and grateful to work with a great Residency within a great Department within a great University within a great City and Country (the State is pretty good :)). We got great by recruiting great people and working together to build our services. I hope anyone great reading this will look into how much joy and impact they could find here.
