Dr. Alan Buchman, M.D., M.S.P.H.

Dr. Alan Buchman (M.D., M.S.P.H.) is considered an internationally recognized expert in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, and autoimmune enteritis), short bowel syndrome, nutritional support, intestinal failure/transplant, and parenteral/enteral nutrition and has been at the forefront of the development of new medications, devices, and foods to treat patients with complex gastrointestinal disorders.

He developed the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and Intestinal Rehabilitation Centers at Northwestern University where he was Professor of Medicine and Surgery and served on the faculty for 13 years. Dr. Buchman has assisted patients from most states in the United States and many foreign countries and was the third clinician in the country to utilize capsule endoscopy. He has provided commentary for CNN, ABC, NBC, CBC, Telamundo and a host of print media including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and magazines such as Women’s Health, US News, and World Report on IBD and various nutrition issues. His three textbooks are used widely in the medical field and he is in the process of editing a new textbook in gastrointestinal disease and nutrition for clinicians. He has lectured and directed seminars widely across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific to educate physicians and other health care providers on the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disease, especially how they relate to nutrition as well as nutritional consequences of gastrointestinal disorders, and he served as an editor for many gastroenterology and nutrition journals.

In addition, Dr. Buchman has consulted for the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Justice and played a significant role in the establishment of the new RDAs for food. As former acting chair of the FDA’s Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee, he served in leadership positions for numerous national and international organizations in gastroenterology and nutrition and is a former president of the American Federation for Medical Research in addition to being a former member of the Oley Foundation Board of Trustees, numerous research grant review panels, and the Congressional National Digestive Disease Commission. His own investigations include studies in inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome, intestinal failure, medical nutrition, complications related to parenteral nutrition, and medical device development, and he has been an invited visiting professor at many leading national and international medical schools.
