Heather M. Weinreich, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. With a broad background in otolaryngology and a specialty in Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery, she has expertise in hearing disorders, chronic ear diseases, lateral skull base tumors, superior semi-circular canal dehiscence, and vestibular disorders of the inner ear.

She is part of the team whose expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of diseases including chronic infections of the ear, balance disorders, skull base tumors, hearing loss from infancy through adulthood and disorders of the facial nerve. Dr. Weinreich is part of the Happy Ears on Taylor St., working with adult cochlear implant patients.

Dr. Weinreich has specific clinical interests in vestibular disorders including Meniere’s disease and vestibular migraine. Her research interests include clinical efficiency, models for health care delivery and the role of gender in surgical education.

Dr. Weinreich is one of three scholars with the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) The BIRCWH is a women’s health and sex/gender-based research career development program and is an NIH-funded, K12 training grant to mentor scientists in women’s health and sex/gender-based health research.

Evaluation of Gender in Surgical Education, Skill Acquisition and Communication

  • Assess for implicit bias in evaluation of surgical skills and clinical knowledge in a surgical residency program
  • Evaluate if gender predicts efficiency in surgical skills
  • Determine if gender differences exist in learning surgical skills
  • Research the role instrument size and equipment has on surgical skills and surgeon confidence within field of otolaryngology as it pertains to gender
  • Study the impact of gender and communication within a surgical OR team
  • Explore if gender and resulting communication affects patient safety in the OR
