Sports Medicine Fellowship

A one year ACGME accredited programs that offers fellows essential hands-on sports medicine experience.

This program is based out of the University of Illinois – College of Medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. The Program Director is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The fellow rotates with three sports medicine physiatrists, one sports medicine orthopedist (Dr. Mark Hutchinson- Team USA Olympic team physician), and two sports medicine family medicine doctors for a wide breadth of experience.

Facilities

Our main clinic is housed in the UIC athlete practice center, facilitating easy communication between athletes, trainers, and physicians.

Radiology and Ultrasound

Significant skills training include dedicated time for diagnostic radiology and ultrasound, including ultrasound guided injections and prolotherapy, casting & splinting, and suturing.

Didactics

There are two didactic sessions a week, one a multidisciplinary sports medicine lecture, the other to prepare for the requirements of the sports medicine subspecialty examination.

Didactics highlights include:

Combined monthly Sports Medicine/Sports Physical Therapy journal club (involving sports physicians, sports physical therapists, fellow, and sports physical therapy resident)
Weekly sports medicine didactics (including journal club or boards-focused lectures)
Lectures given to physical medicine and rehabilitation, family medicine, orthopedic, and pediatric residents

Affiliation with the Advocate Medical Group Sports Medicine in Park Ridge

This is our affiliated program with Philip Skiba, DO Director with research interest in performance exercise science and cardiac testing, as well as Kayleigh Suhs DO. High school football medical event coverage is included through this program, as well as Oakton Community College. Our fellow spends one day a week with Advocate for exposure for these opportunities.
