Kyphoplasty/Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are similar procedures that aim to restore a damaged vertebra’s height and may also relieve pain. The only difference between the two is that Kyphoplasty involves the additional step of creating space for the treatment with a balloon-like device. This procedure involves the use of a specialized form of medical cement that helps rebuild and reshape the functional structure of the spine. Cancer-damaged vertebrae or certain spinal fractures are ideal candidates for Kyphoplasty.

The Spine Care and Surgery department at the University of Illinois Chicago specializes in treating rare and complex conditions and injuries. We have a diverse team of industry-leading surgeons with the experience needed to treat and manage severe spine injuries. Being a tertiary referral center we specialize in revision surgery and we often successfully treat the patients who are told “nothing else could be done” for them. You can trust that our team will provide you with the best possible results.

How Kyphoplasty Works

Before the Procedure

Our team will run a full spectrum of tests including blood work, X-rays, MRI’s and any necessary diagnostics to locate the source of your condition.

During the Procedure:

  • This procedure is performed under anesthesia
  • Using X-ray imaging to guide their tools, your doctor will insert a needle into the bone, then inflate a balloon to shape and move the vertebrae.
  • The cement is then injected into the target area and shaped
  • The entire procedure will take around 1 hour, although it may be longer if more vertebrae require correction

After the Procedure:

  • You will spend time in a recovery room and may be required to spend the night.
  • After an hour, it is possible to stand and walk around if needed.
  • You may experience pain in the treated area, but it will subside in a few days.
  • You will quickly notice a substantial reduction in pain.

Our team of doctors will provide you with instructions on which activities you should avoid and for how long. We will also recommend taking certain vitamins and medications to help strengthen your bones and prevent future injury.
