Our ACGME-approved fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine is designed to provide the neurologist with expertise in diagnosis and management of patients with peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction, and muscle disease. The fellowship is structured to meet the certification requirements developed by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for Added Qualifications in Neuromuscular Medicine. A second year of advanced study is available by special arrangement, and requires the completion of a basic or clinical research project.
The fellowship includes experiences in both our outpatient neuromuscular clinics (including a Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) sponsored Neuromuscular Disorders Clinic and a Motor Neuron Disease Clinic) and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (JBVA) . The fellow will also gain experience with inpatient neuromuscular consultation. The time commitment in the electromyography laboratory is flexible but fellows are expected to master standard electrodiagnostic techniques. Fellows may also learn advanced electromyographic techniques such as single fiber electromyography. Peripheral nerve and muscle pathology and genetics are reviewed in scheduled conferences.
Lastly, there are opportunities for clinical research during the fellowship. A research project suitable for publication or presentation is a required fellowship component.
There are available positions for two fellows to begin in July of each academic year. We accept applications about 15 months before the fellowship start date and continue to accept applications until our positions are filled. Interviews are usually scheduled during the Spring. To begin the application process, please contact our Program Coordinator: Jeannette Hernandez. A completed application form should be returned to us along with an updated copy of your curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation.
When your application is complete, you will be considered for a personal interview. Our final decisions regarding fellow selection are usually made about 9-10 months before the start date (July of each academic year). Please direct any questions regarding the status of your application to Jeannette Hernandez.
