Neuromuscular Fellowship

Overview Heading link

Our ACGME-approved fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine is designed to provide the neurologist with expertise in diagnosis and management of patients with peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction, and muscle disease. The fellowship is structured to meet the certification requirements developed by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for Added Qualifications in Neuromuscular Medicine. A second year of advanced study is available by special arrangement, and requires the completion of a basic or clinical research project.

The fellowship includes experiences in both our outpatient neuromuscular clinics (including a Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) sponsored Neuromuscular Disorders Clinic and a Motor Neuron Disease Clinic) and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (JBVA) . The fellow will also gain experience with inpatient neuromuscular consultation. The time commitment in the electromyography laboratory is flexible but fellows are expected to master standard electrodiagnostic techniques. Fellows may also learn advanced electromyographic techniques such as single fiber electromyography. Peripheral nerve and muscle pathology and genetics are reviewed in scheduled conferences.

Lastly, there are opportunities for clinical research during the fellowship. A research project suitable for publication or presentation is a required fellowship component.
