  • Our expert team of physicians specializes in interventional endoscopy, pancreaticobiliary disease, hereditary GI cancer syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, esophageal disease, small intestinal failure as well as liver diseases including evaluation for liver and small bowel transplantation
  • Our scientific investigators are conducting innovative fundamental research in critical Gastroenterology and Hepatology diseases to advance knowledge and translate research into clinical practice
  • Our Gastroenterology fellowship program is a fully accredited and in good standing with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We also offer an ACGME accredited Transplant Hepatology fellowship as well as an year of advanced endoscopy training

History

  • Prior : Illinois Research and Education
  • 1971 Named University of Illinois Hospital, Don Wilson appointed first Director of GI with 3 part time faculty member. The section chief, Reuven Levitan, was based at the VA. There were 2 trainees.
  • 1972 first external grant was received by Don Wilson.
  • Section grew to six fellows and 3 new faculty; Drs. Stephen Winter, Thomas J. Layden and Juan Engel.
