Professor Valenta, the former Director of the Patient Safety Leadership (PSL) programs, was a founding member of Institute for Patient Safety Excellence (IPSE) here at UIC. With funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Department of Defense (DOD), Dr. Valenta’s research and teaching focus on social and organizational issues related to health technology, including the role information systems play in patient safety. She was a consulting faculty member for the AHRQ-funded grant entitled “The Seven Pillars: Crossing the Patient Safety-Medical Liability Chasm”. The purpose of this AHRQ-funded project was to evaluate the impact of the “Seven Pillars” – a comprehensive response to patient harm that links effective and honest communication with improvements in patient safety and reducing medical liability risk.
Professor Valenta’s publications have appeared in major journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Academic Medicine, the International Journal of Computational Models and Algorithms in Medicine, and Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine. She has served as a Review Board Member for the Journal of Biomedical Informatics and is a member of the Delta Omega Society, a public health honorary fraternity.
