Call Night

It would start quietly at 5:01 PM
passing smoothly into the eye.
Hours later, with a midnight meal
I looked forward to breakfast.

Same cafeteria,
getting frozen yogurt that she wanted
or was it a smoothie
sore limbs, back, and
belly emptied
of a daughter.

Anger at a biochemistry text, awkward
words, fumbling, righteous rebelling,
sleepless nights fearing on the west side
lead to a midnight at a hospital,
without a page or ill-fitting scrubs.
