Message from the Department Head

Welcome to our website! We seek energetic, forward thinking, team-oriented family physicians with a passion for social service and caring for the underserved. Our department’s faculty share a mission to provide excellent clinical care, education, and research that matter and meet the needs of a diverse urban population.

We are committed to providing care to many underserved communities, including patients with HIV, substance use disorder, transgender care, and full spectrum family planning. The department partners with Mile Square Health Center, a federally qualified health center that serves an inner city population at over ten outpatient sites. The department runs the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) student health service, serving over 30,000 students. In addition to two clinics directly serving care to our students and the community, we operate two inpatient services at the University of Illinois Hospital, one dedicated to adults and another also caring for pregnant patients, newborns, and children.

The department supports a broad range of clinical interests among its faculty and is committed to supporting and mentoring its members. We have a top-rated Family and Community Medicine clerkship that trains over 200 medical students each year and an outstanding Family and Community Medicine Residency with 27 residents. We have a longstanding history of developing educational innovations aimed at preparing the heath workforce to meet the needs of our diverse patient populations. Our research core has grown, with expertise in the areas of cancer, substance use disorder, clinical informatics, perinatal care, and HIV/AIDS, the latter involving a long-standing interprofessional education and training in HIV/AIDS management through the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC), which is under our department.

I invite you to explore our website, and if you have questions, reach out to me at mjimbo@uic.edu. I look forward to hearing from you!
