I was born and raised in Guinea Bissau, a West Africa. Witnessing the loss of my 16-year old cousin rekindled my desire to become a physician and an agent of change committed to serve underserved communities. This dream led me to complete my medical education in China and my MPH at UIC. My work at UIC and Mile Square Health Center attracted me to this FM program. The DFCM’s vision of “treating every individual as a human being first” and the commitment of its faculty to address health disparities, resonated with my call to serve the underserved. My journey prepared me to meet the needs of our diverse patient population at UI Health. My path of becoming a Physician, led me to become a polyglot – a speaker of five languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese Creole), which gives me the opportunity to communicate with patients from diverse backgrounds. More importantly, speaking the language of love helps me to touch lives beyond words & transcend any language/cultural barrier.
Outside of work, I enjoy singing, playing instruments (acoustic guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, jimbe), watching funny videos (I love to laugh), learning languages (French) and jogging.
