Weekly Family Medicine Residency Education Sessions

All Family Medicine residents participate in a one-half day per week structured learning experience. Following departmental Grand Rounds, these sessions focus on family medicine content, clinical reasoning, community medicine, cultural process content and skills, communication skills, basic procedural skills, and focused self-education.

8am meeting Grand Rounds (Rm 196) Speakers for the Department and University present topics of interest to the residents, faculty, students and invited community members.
I Journal Club A resident led journal club facilitated by the faculty.
II Behavioral Medicine Behavioral medicine integrates knowledge in the biological, behavioral, psychological and social sciences into the approach to health and illness. Sessions are taught by our FM behavioral scientist and invited partners from psychiatry and other departments.
III Program Director & Resident Meeting Protected meeting with the PD, core faculty and residents. Session alternates with Sports Medicine.
Sports Medicine Series Taught by UIC sports medicine physicians and fellows. Session alternates with the PD/Res meeting.

I Medical Knowledge Series A topic-based session that focuses on both learning and test-taking.
II Women’s Health Series An educational series focused on women’s health and maternity care. Includes procedural training and L&D drills.
III Management of Health Systems (R2/R3) Longitudinal practice management curriculum that focuses on the revenue cycle, medical informatics, and communicating with staff.
R1 Support Group Confidential meeting between the interns and our behavioral scientist that focuses on self-care, wellness and transitions.

Week 3

8am meeting Quality Meeting/Clinicians’ Meeting (UV) Residents and faculty conduct ongoing activities to improve clinical outcomes. Sessions alternate between an outpatient clinical operations meeting and inpatient case review.
I Guests of Family Medicine University specialists and FM partners present specialty care topics for the family physician.
II Common Clinical Problems/ Case-Based Learning Core FM content sessions alternating with case-base learning sessions.
III Resident Meeting Protected meeting for the residents facilitated by the chief residents.

Week 4

I Care of Children Series An educational series focused on the care of children (chronic disease, preventive medicine and psychosocial topics).
II Vulnerable Populations Series Learning sessions are focused on social justice, advocacy and equity for vulnerable populations including the elderly, LGBTQ including transgender, the homeless, immigrant health and more. Speakers are from family medicine and invited partners.
III Scholarship Series (R2/R3) This series provides residents opportunities to engage in scholarly endeavors in multiple domains. Under faculty guidance, residents design and implement two scholarly projects which include quality improvement.
Intern Core Series (R1) A topic-based session focused on early trainee concepts (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, anemia, health maintenance).

Clinical Procedures Workshops & Retreats Longer sessions that allow hands-on practice of procedural skills along with the necessary cognitive content. Activities include casting, ultrasound and suturing. Sessions are also used up to twice annually for wellness retreats.
