The Department’s Research Division consists of three faculty PhD scientists and three MD clinician investigators who perform cutting edge research. In addition, there are clinicians within our department who perform clinical research. The Department has research lab space in the Medical Science Building at 835 South Wolcott Avenue, as well as at the Jesse Brown VA. We work closely in our research with other departments within UIC, including Pharmacology, Pulmonary Medicine, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, College of Dentistry, Wound Healing  and Chemistry. We have students at all levels from high school, undergraduate, graduate, and medical students as well as Department residents working on research with our faculty. In 2019, Department faculty with NIH grants included Drs. Feinstein, Hu, Minshall, and Roth. The Department research is also supported by a number of foundations.

Dr. Roth is the Vice Head for Research. Professors Feinstein, Minshall, Roth, Weinberg, and Hu have active research labs. Drs. Helen Lee, Steven Roth, and Guy Weinberg are clinician investigators who perform basic science and/or clinical research. Click the links on the left side of the page to read more the vast array of investigation being undertaken presently by Department faculty. Contact Dr. Roth or any of the Department researchers for further information on their work.

Department faculty publish their work in leading journals. Publications by Department faculty may be viewed in the link to the left. The Department has an active set of IRB protocols for clinical research (link on the left side of page).

We are grateful for the support that we receive from the Department to assist with our research. The Department has a full time research administrator (Brian Bacon). Brian is responsible for both pre- and post-grant assistance. In addition, we have a full time clinical research assistant who also helps with statistical analysis (Alex Barbaranova). A full time network administrator (Paul Clifford) assists the research faculty with computer networking and sharing.
