Chief Resident’s Welcome Message

Welcome to the University of Illinois Hospital (UIC) Department of Anesthesiology residency program! Thank you for your interest and for taking your time in getting to know us. We would like to present what we believe is a strong anesthesiology program of which we are very proud to be a part. UIC has a long-standing tradition of graduating exceptional consultant anesthesiologists due to our outstanding mentorship, positive work culture, resident camaraderie, professionalism, and excellent clinical training.

Each UIC Anesthesiology class is composed of twelve residents, from many different backgrounds but with the common qualities of being personable, proactive, responsible, and committed to building good relationships inside and outside of the hospital. Amongst the diversity and caliber of our faculty members, we have many leaders in their respective subspecialty fields. Our program is incredibly welcoming and collegial between all members, and the resident body has a voice and is able to express itself openly.

The residency program is structured in a way that sets up our residents for success. Our intern year is unique in that it includes four months of clinical anesthesia rotations between the University of Illinois hospital and Jesse Brown VA. Interns are paired closely with attendings and senior residents in an effort to build a strong foundation. This enables our interns to learn the fundamental concepts of being an anesthesiologist so they are miles ahead of the curve once they start their CA-1 year.

Our home base is the University of Illinois Hospital, where during the Clinical Anesthesia years our residents get excellent exposure to Neuroanesthesia, Obstetrics, Regional, Chronic Pain, Pediatrics, Cardiac, Transplant, and Critical Care. To promote further exposure to subspecialties, we also rotate at the Hines VA and Loyola for Cardiac Anesthesia, Shriners Hospitals for Children for complex pediatric cases and Mount Sinai Hospital for Trauma. For those interested in global health, our department sponsors an International away rotation for eligible CA-3s. This great variety gives us an advantage as we become accustomed to effectively learning and working in different environments.

Chicago is an incredible, world class metropolitan area that we are fortunate to call home. Some of the country’s best gastronomy happens here every day, and there are endless possibilities for different cuisines, sports, music, fine arts, festivals, a neighborhood for each and all. You name it, this city has it! In the words of the late Anthony Bourdain: “Chicago is a town, a city that doesn’t ever have to measure itself against any other city. Other places have to measure themselves against it. It’s big, it’s outgoing, it’s tough, it’s opinionated, and everybody’s got a story.”

Thank you once again for visiting our site. We hope to meet you in this upcoming season and that you will get to know our great program and its members.
