Chief Resident’s Welcome Message

Welcome to the University of Illinois Hospital (UIC) Department of Anesthesiology! Thank you for your interest in our program and for taking the time to get to know us. UIC has a long-standing tradition of graduating exceptional anesthesiologists due to our outstanding mentorship, positive work culture, resident camaraderie, and excellent clinical training.

Each year we welcome twelve new residents to join our team. We are proud to consistently train residents who are personable, proactive, responsible, and committed to building strong relationships inside and outside of the hospital. Both by design and through a healthy culture fostered by our department, our program makes concerted efforts to seek resident input. We are constantly evolving in response to the resident body’s voice to optimize the environment for our residents both personally and academically.

We are lucky to have faculty members with a broad range of expertise, and amongst them we have many leaders in their respective subspecialty fields. Our intern year is unique in that it includes four months of clinical anesthesia rotations between the University of Illinois hospital and Jesse Brown VA. Interns are paired closely with attendings and senior residents in an effort to build a strong foundation. This enables our interns to learn the fundamental concepts of anesthesiology so they are miles ahead of the curve once they start their CA-1 year.

Our home base is the University of Illinois Hospital, where during the Clinical Anesthesia years our residents get an immersive experience in Neuroanesthesia, Obstetrics, Regional, Chronic Pain, Pediatrics, Cardiac, Transplant, and Critical Care. We are also opening a brand new outpatient surgical center in the fall of 2022. To promote further exposure to subspecialties, we also rotate at the Loyola University Hospital for Cardiac Anesthesia and Cardiovascular ICU, the University of Chicago for Trauma, Shriners Hospitals for Children for complex pediatric cases, and Northshore University for advanced Regional Anesthesia. For those interested in global health, our department sponsors an international rotation for eligible CA-3s. This wide variety of hospital systems and practice settings prepares us to succeed in future work environments.

Chicago is an incredible, world class metropolitan area that we are fortunate to call home. Some of the country’s best restaurants reside here and there are endless possibilities for different cuisines, sports, music, fine arts, and festivals to attend. You name it, Chicago has it! Chicago is composed of distinct neighborhoods within the city that can provide anything from the around-the-clock excitement to a peaceful, family friendly feel. Our residents live in a variety of these neighborhoods (River North, South + West Loop, Wicker Park, Logan Square, Pilsen, and Lincoln Park just to name a few) and always find time to meet up outside of work to explore the city. UIC Hospital is conveniently located in the Medical District neighborhood and is easily accessible by public transportation from all ends of the city, or, you can just live right down the block near Taylor Street!

Thank you once again for your interest in UIC- a program we are proud to call our home. We hope to meet you in this upcoming interview season, where we can have the chance to get to know one another.
