Welcome applicants
Thank you for visiting the University of Illinois Anesthesiology website. We hope that you will browse around to learn more about our program and the residency.
Check out the Message From The Program Director. Go to the Residency section on our website and explore how the residency program is structured, what some of our former and current residents have to say about it, and read the FAQ to find answers to some commonly asked questions. Residents can begin training in the department at either the intern (PGY-1) or CA-1 (PGY-2) level.
All positions are filled via the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). For the past several years, we have offered 12 categorical positions via this route. Matched applicants will do their internship rotations at the University of Illinois Hospital and at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center before beginning the three years of clinical anesthesia training.
The second mode of entry is at the CA-1 level through the Physician (R0) positions offered through the NRMP. We usually fill 2-4 of these each year. They are for residents who have completed an internship year and wish to begin CA-1 training in the year of the match.
We interview applicants for the residency match between October and January. All applications are reviewed by our residency selection committee to determine suitability for an interview. Applications are accepted ONLY through ERAS. The University will not support H-1B visa applications for foreign medical graduates in residency programs. All interviews are conducted on Saturday mornings. Interview weekend starts on Friday evening, when the applicants have dinner with several of our residents at a classic Chicago steakhouse. On Saturday, things get started with a presentation by members of the selection committee. During the rest of the morning, applicants alternately interview with faculty members (each applicant will have three interviews), or convene in the conference room to chat with current residents. The chief residents deliver their presentation around noon. This is followed by two more interview rounds, and some closing remarks by the selection committee. Interview Saturday is typically completed by 1:00-1:30 PM.
Below you will find contact information for getting started in the application process. We look forward to hearing from you.
