Medical Students

UI College of Medicine students should follow these steps to apply for a global health education experience or elective.

  1. Go to the Office of International Education website under the tab “Study Abroad” where you can find information about international elective opportunities, in addition to those listed on this study abroad page.
  2. Students who intend to apply for elective credit will need to contact Dr. Ara Tekian (tekian@uic.edu) at least 3 months in advance of the elective to see if an “Agreement for Student Placement in a Practice Setting” is in place with the partnering institution.
  3. Students will need to complete the “Away Elective Application” a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the elective once the above Agreement is in place. This application form is available as a link from the Study Abroad page.
  4. Students who are seeking elective credit for international rotations must register with the International Travel Safety Portal (through the Office of Global Engagement)
  5. All students are encouraged to review the Center for Global Health Pre-Departure Field Training Guide. This Guide was developed for students in the Global Medicine (GMED) Program but is relevant to all UICOM students with the exception that non-GMED students do NOT need to fill out the “GMED Travel Request Form” or “GMED Scholarly Funding Form.”
