Medical Students
Introduction
UI College of Medicine students should follow these steps to apply for a global health education experience or elective.
- Go to the Office of International Education website under the tab “Study Abroad” where you can find information about international elective opportunities, in addition to those listed on this study abroad page.
- Students who intend to apply for elective credit will need to contact Dr. Ara Tekian (tekian@uic.edu) at least 3 months in advance of the elective to see if an “Agreement for Student Placement in a Practice Setting” is in place with the partnering institution.
- Students will need to complete the “Away Elective Application” a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the elective once the above Agreement is in place. This application form is available as a link from the Study Abroad page.
- Students who are seeking elective credit for international rotations must register with the International Travel Safety Portal (through the Office of Global Engagement)
- All students are encouraged to review the Center for Global Health Pre-Departure Field Training Guide. This Guide was developed for students in the Global Medicine (GMED) Program but is relevant to all UICOM students with the exception that non-GMED students do NOT need to fill out the “GMED Travel Request Form” or “GMED Scholarly Funding Form.”
