International Electives
Intro
International electives can be an important part of global health education for medical students and physician trainees and in supporting the UIC Center for Global Health’s aim of advancing health equity. International field experiences can support professional development of trainees; contribute to sustainable global health partnerships; and build skills in cultural competency, cost-effective care, and utilization of resources. Aside from bridging the global healthcare divide, trainees with global health training are also better prepared to treat vulnerable domestic populations including immigrants, refugees, patients with limited English proficiency, racial/ethnic minorities, those with non-Western health beliefs, and military veterans.
International electives can encompass coursework, clinical fieldwork in international settings, participation in research, and/or policy or advocacy initiatives.
The CGH aims to support global health experiences that:
- Are of high educational value
- Offer benefit to both the trainee and the host site
- Will be responsibly implemented with appropriate supervision and structure
- Are ethically sound and culturally appropriate
- Prioritize the safety and welfare of trainees
