Celebration of Life and Legacy of the late Antonio ‘Tony’ Scommegna, MD was held in Chicago on Wednesday October 25, 2017 at Francesca’s restaurant, which was actually one of Tony’s favorites!

Dr. Scommegna was former Department Head at UIC for 10 years and over his 30 years as Department Head in Chicago, first at Michael Reese Hospital and then at UIC, he mentored and trained more than 200 residents and fellows. Dr. Scommegna was a great clinician and a true “doctor’s doctor”. He also pioneered the development of the intrauterine progestogen-releasing contraceptive device (IUD), which is now used throughout the world for long-acting contraception.

Dr. Scommegna’s entire family was in attendance, including his wife Lill, his daughter Paola and husband Paul, his son Frank and wife Eileen, and his son Roger and wife Pat.

Many of Dr. Scommegna’s former colleagues and trainees attended the Celebration, some coming from quite far, including Sandra Carson, MD, who is now at the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Washington, D.C., Paul Blumenthal, MD, MPH, who is now at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, Grace Janik, MD, who is former President of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and works in Milwaukee, WI, and Janet Rader, MD, who is Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. We heard many of Dr. Scommegna’s former colleagues pay him official tribute in the form of eloquent anecdotes, including Sandra Carson, MD; Paul Blumenthal, MD, MPH; Grace Janik, MD; Humberto Scoccia, MD, who is Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UIC, John Sciarra, MD, who is former Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University; Edward Linn, MD, who is Department Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cook County Stroger Hospital; Gail Prins, PhD, who is Michael Reese Professor of Urology and Physiology at UIC; Lawrence Ross, MD who is former Department Head of Urology at UIC; Lawrence Burd, MD who is former Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Michael Reese Hospital and subsequently faculty member at UIC.

This truly was a great occasion to celebrate the Life and Legacy of Antonio Scommegna, MD, research pioneer, mentor to many of today’s leaders in Obstetrics and Gynecology, husband, father  and friend!
