Our Annual Conference, “Challenges in OB/Gyn: Pearls for Practice”, held on October 26-27, 2017, was a resounding success!  Registrants heard from and interacted with national and international Distinguished Faculty who provided state-of-the-art lectures on patient care topics.

The annual conference began with the twelfth annual Antonio Scommegna Symposium. The keynote speaker for symposium was Dr. Julia Johnson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Massachusetts, who spoke in detail on menopausal challenges for gynecologists. An interactive session concluded the symposium where the speakers responded to questions on their given lectures. This was moderated by Dr. Frank González and included Dr. Julia Johnson (menopausal challenges), Dr. Humberto Scoccia (premature ovarian insufficiency), and Dr.  Pauline Maki (menopause and cognition).

The Gynecology symposium followed the Antonio Scommegna Symposium on Thursday afternoon. The Charles Sumner Bacon Lectureship was given by Dr. James Shwayder, Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Mississippi. Dr. Shwayder discussed the many medico-legal issues that may arise with consulting patients online. The symposium concluded with a question and answer session lead by Dr. Sondra Summers (Prophylaxis for Venous Thromboembolic Events), and included Dr. James Shwayde(medic-legal technology issues), Dr. William Kobak (Prevention and Identification of Injuries to Lower Urinary Tract),  Dr. Anders Mellgren (Prevention and Identification of Injuries to the Gastrointestinal Tract), and Dr. Erica Hinz (Placement of Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive Immediately After Delivery).

Friday morning opened with the 17th Annual Laird Wilson Perinatal Symposium where keynote speaker Dr. Michael Bebbington, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Director of the Fetal Care Center at Washington University at St. Louis, lectured on fetal surgery.  A panel  session of challenging clinical cases was moderated by Dr. Micaela Della Torre, with Michael Bebbington, Dr. Laura DiGiovanni (MFM) Dr. De-Ann Pillers (Neonatology), and Dr. James Shwayer participating.

Friday Afternoon Dr. Jamie N. Bakkum-Gamez, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Gynecologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, gave the keynote lecture for the Gynecologic Oncology Symposium on “Enhanced Recovery”: The New Standard in Gynecologic Surgery.  Dr. Andras Ladanyi moderated a session on gynecologic oncology case studies Dr. Jamie N. Bakkum-Gamez, Dr. Tara Maga, and Dr. Rajul Kothari.
