SIMULATION CENTER
For an introduction to our SimMan click here.
The newest addition to the Clinical Performance Center is the Simulation Center that features SimMan by Laerdal. SimMan is a computer-programmable, full-body simulation manikin. Scenarios can be programmed into the computer via special software. Integrated into the scenario through the SimMan are patient responses that can include verbal statements, lung sounds, heart sounds, changes in vital signs, etc. This flexibility allows the manikin to perform as an actual patient would in a given situation. Real-life cases are often used to enhance the authenticity of the simulation. The responses from SimMan are based on the care provided by the participants: improvement when proper care is given and deterioration if treatment is wrong or delayed.
With no risk to real patients, a variety of scenarios can be run on SimMan. This capability attracts participants from different disciplines who are looking for an opportunity to learn critical decision-making skills by running through scenarios designed to simulate real-life cases. By bringing together medical students, residents, nursing students, respiratory therapy students, and others into one room, the communication, respect and trust between these disciplines can improve thereby improving patient care and patient safety. Scenarios can run from the very simple to the very complex thus encouraging participants to consider a multitude of possibilities as each individual case unfolds. Through formal debriefing participants have the ability to review their performance via a digital recording while holding a discussion that is geared to help them understand how and why choices were made. This affords them the opportunity to consider whether there might be other treatment options in similar situations.
The learning never ends and simulation is just one of the newest ways we have to enhance the experience.
Open Simulation Lab
The Simulation Lab will be open for practice simulations on specified days for specified hours. Simulation Lab time is BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Groups of 2, 3 or 4 participants may sign up for one hour at a time. This hour will include debriefing time (which is required for every simulation). Please contact Cindy LeDonne for scheduling your simulation event. Please make sure to view the Prepare for Simulation Page as well as the Simulation Video before scheduling an open simualtion time.
Open Simulation Dates
September 26th ~ 9 am to 4 pm
October 24th ~ 9 am to 4 pm
For simulations, you must provide an objective when you schedule. For example, work on ACLS protocol for V-Fib, or to work on respiratory distress situations. This allows time for the simulation specialist to prepare appropriate simulations.
