PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM:
Open to all 4th year medical students who have successfully completed their core rotations in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, and Ob/Gyn. An elective application must be completed and submitted. The application, as well as more elective information, is available at the Medical Students tab on the residency website: www.christem.com.
NOTE: This elective may not be dropped within eight weeks of the start date.
PURPOSE:
The Emergency Medicine Elective is designed to allow the student to encounter a broad image of emergency problems in all areas of this large, Level I Trauma Center. The Emergency Department serves approximately 90,000 patients per year, and has a three-year Emergency Medicine Residency. The student will evaluate and manage patients under the direction of Emergency Medicine senior residents and faculty. Whenever possible, the student will be afforded the opportunity to perform routine emergency procedures such as wound repair, airway management, etc.
COMPETENCIES:
- Developing a more focused approach to obtaining history and physical exam on a wide variety of patients;
- Formulating a thorough problem list for each patient, emphasizing the progression from most to least dangerous differential diagnosis for each problem;
- Formulating an efficient, logical and cost effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategy for each patient;
- Familiarization with the most common life and limb threatening emergencies, including exposure to ACLS, ATLS, and PALS techniques;
- Experience with common invasive and non-invasive emergency procedures, as well as interpretation of routine test results;
- Gaining greater confidence in and a deeper understanding of the management of multiple patients with a variety of acuities; and
- Enhancing skills at teamwork, patient-physician relations, and patient and family education.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
The student is expected to work a variety of day, night, and weekend shifts for a total of 14 shifts, with an optional paramedic ride along. Schedules are flexible, with requests submitted prior to starting the rotation. Teaching conference is every Wednesday from 8:00am – 12:30pm, and is mandatory. Conference consists of a mix of didactic and interactive lectures, as well as exposure to simulated code cases. On-shift teaching from attendings and residents is also a significant component of this elective.
ASSESSMENT:
Daily shift evaluation sheets, online quizzes, and both a case presentation and final exam at the end of the elective. An NBME is held the afternoon of the final Friday of the rotation.

Students reporting to Advocate Christ Medical Center for the Emergency Medicine Elective are to go to the Department of Emergency Medicine Office, Room 185-W in the main hospital at 4440 W. 95th Street. Upon arrival they are to check in with Ann Nestor in Room 185-W.
